Flap discs are versatile, highperformance abrasive tools consisting of multiple overlapping abrasive flaps (or leaves) radially arranged and bonded to a rigid fiberglass backing plate. Each flap is composed of abrasive grain (aluminum oxide, zirconia alumina, ceramic alumina, or silicon carbide) bonded with resin or resin/cloth combination. The disc is centermounted with a standard arbor hole for use on angle grinders and portable power tools.

Flap discs combine the aggressive material removal of grinding discs with the finishing capability of sanding discs, providing a multistage solution from stock removal to final finish in one tool.

Design Types:

  • Flat Type (Type 27): For surface grinding at 0 - 15° angle
  • Conical/Depressed Center (Type 29): For contour work at 15 - 25° angle (improved performance at lower pressure)

Selection Guide

Application Recommended Grit Abrasive Type Disc Type Notes
Heavy Weld Removal #40 - #60 Zirconia Alumina Type 29 High stock removal
Weld Blending/Finishing #60 - #120 Zirconia Alumina Type 27/29 Balance of removal/finish
Stainless Steel Finishing #80 - #180 Ceramic Alumina Type 27 Minimizes heat discoloration
Deburring & Edge Work #60 - #120 Aluminum Oxide Type 29 Good contour following
Paint/Rust Removal #60 - #80 Zirconia Alumina Type 27 Aggressive cleaning
Final Surface Preparation #120 - #240 Aluminum Oxide Type 27 For painting/coating
Non Ferrous Metals #80 - #180 Silicon Carbide Type 27 Aluminum, copper, brass

Optimal Operating Technique:

Angle: 5 - 25° relative to workpiece (Type 29: 15 - 25°, Type 27: 0 - 15°)

Pressure: Moderate, consistent pressure (let the disc do the work)

Motion: Use sweeping, even strokes; avoid dwelling in one spot

Work Area: Utilize entire disc surface for even wear

Speed: Maintain consistent grinder speed
